Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Sunnyvale’s Fremont High School is a microcosm of California. The school’s student population mirrors the demographics of the City of Sunnyvale, the County of Santa Clara, and the State of California. The variety of student backgrounds is amazing and inspiring. The richness of this diversity offers many opportunities and challenges. Fremont High School’s response is to provide a variety of programs designed to meet the needs of all students. The students and staff at Fremont High School guide the creation of a positive, nurturing learning environment.
Graduates of Fremont High School are able to: communicate clearly and persuasively in oral, written and visual work; gather, organize, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of sources; work independently, collaboratively, and honestly; self-assess, making modifications to increase achievement; connect with the school and community as active, involved citizens; and learn and apply literacy skills to become more effective students. These skills and activities are integrated within the multiple academic disciplines and activities available for students on campus. Fremont High School students have benefited from a variety of grants and state and federal funds, all focused on helping to raise student achievement. A wide spectrum of courses allows students to pursue personal interests and to challenge themselves academically while preparing for college and careers beyond high school. Student leadership programs center on “student voice,” encouraging and facilitating student involvement in schoolwide issues.
Fremont High School leads the Fremont Union High School District in technology where it is incorporated in all curricular areas to expand students’ opportunities for learning and growth. This is possible, for example, through laptop mobile computer labs, a state-of-the-art Library/Media Center, and an on-site professional broadcasting studio. In addition, our high-end career exploration courses weave in the latest technology through the Regional Occupation Program (ROP). These classes afford upper class students the opportunity to explore careers in business, communications, networking and computer repair, auto repair, biotechnology, and medicine. There are scores of school programs that promote positive learning such as peer tutoring, peer mentoring, conflict resolution teams, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), band, choir, drama, journalism, athletic, cheer and dance teams, and over forty clubs including the Chess Club, Comedy Sportz, Poetry Slam, Interact, Key Club, Latinas, Math Club, and Technology Club.
Fremont places a high premium on the value of good communication with parents and guardians. Written progress reports and report cards are mailed home eight times each school year. Our school website is frequently updated and provides parents and the community with detailed information about school events and activities, links to correspondence given to students to bring home, plus a link to our principal’s website. Parents and teachers often communicate via phone calls and emails and parents are welcome to meet with members of our staff. Students and staff are proud of the focus on personalized learning and feel fortunate to have the support of parents, community volunteers, and partner institutions such as Stanford University and U.C. Santa Cruz. The City of Sunnyvale—particularly the economic development group and the Department of Public Safety-- our local Kiwanis branch, business partners, private foundations and public agencies make significant contributions of time, talent, and resources to support the positive work at Fremont High.
