Homestead High School is a nationally recognized four-year comprehensive high school with an enrollment of about 2,250 students. Opened in 1962, Homestead is located on the northwest boundary of the City of Cupertino but primarily serves students from the City of Sunnyvale. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) reaccredited the school in 2004. In 2003 Homestead was recognized for excellence by the California Department of Education as a California Distinguished School and has been designated by the state as a high performing school because of its high AYP and API index score. In 2004 Homestead was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School.
Homestead High School's curriculum is extensive. A faculty of 105 well-qualified teachers offers college preparatory courses, vocational training, and general education. A classified staff of 46 supports the educational program. Homestead High School has a variety of special programs to meet the needs of the exceptional student. Open access Advanced Placement courses are offered in Biology, Calculus/Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, English, U.S. History, Modern Languages, Music and Statistics. Upper division students may enroll concurrently at the local community and four-year colleges, or in advanced interdisciplinary studies. Homestead continues to redesign course and program offerings to meet the needs of its diverse student body. A number of programs promote positive learning for all students, including AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), sheltered and inclusion classes to support the needs of English Language Learners and Special Education students, and an award winning Peer Tutorial program. The school also offers a program called EXCEL to serve the need of students that are trying to pass the Califonria High School Exit Exam and make up credit deficiencies. The school continuously monitors how curriculum, instruction, student support services, staff development, and ongoing assessment and evaluation impact student learning. Homestead introduced a new block schedule in the 2003-2004 school year, including a 30-minute tutorial period four days a week.
Homestead High School provides an outstanding co-curricular program, including its state and national award winning Future Business Leaders of America club. Students actively lead and participate in clubs and athletic teams, providing students an opportunity to be connected with school.
Five times yearly Homestead publishes an informational newsletter, the Gazette. This newsletter is mailed to parents in addition to being posted in its entirety on the school website. Current information is sent out weekly via email through the HHS Blast. Parents and students may access information and monitor academic performance through the Internet on A+ Board. Additionally, information on college and career planning is provided on the website as well as through evening programs.
