FHS National Honor Society & PTSA Sponsored Students For Success Club
Students For Success (SFS) Club is an after-school peer tutoring program launched in October 2006. It is a service offered by the students for the students. National Honor Society (NHS) members volunteer as tutors and earn community service hours. PTSA provides parent volunteers and half of the operating expenses (about $1000). State/District provides funding for SFS teachers. FHS administration provides total support and the rest of the operating expenses.
• Currently we have109 NHS tutors, 550 registered students and operate 11 hours a week
from Monday to Thursday. SFS is under the management of one program manager,
NHS advisor, 6 teachers and 7 parent volunteers.
• Tutoring is FREE for anyone and available in all academic subjects. Many tutors speak
multiple languages. SFS also help students with standardized test preparations, e.g.
CAHSEE and STAR.
• Both tutors’ and students’ attendance are voluntary and flexible to allow participations
in sports and other activities; attendance incentives are offered.
• Everyone is welcome; SFS promotes good study habits and group study. 97% of the
students study with friends and get help with homework; 50% received tutoring and
82% of
all participants considered the SFS experience ‘Good’ or ‘Excellent’
• Students’ attendance and progress are tracked and reported. On an average, 130 students
(30 tutors and 100 students) attend daily during 7th block & after-school. The attendance
has doubled from last school year
• 50% of the regular students (who attend once per week) improved at least ONE letter grade
at the end of the first semester of 2007-2008.
• Over 60 students signed up for SFS Challengers — if improve TWO letter grades by April,
will have a chance to win an iPod. About 20 Challengers have already met the challenge!
• Students For Success’ goal is to empower students with proper learning techniques that
will last beyond high school while enhancing the academic awareness and readiness
on campus.
