On Thursday, Oct. 18, Leslie Aoyama, Diversity Affairs Director for Nordstrom, surprised Serena Lau in her AP Spanish class, by announcing her as a winner of a Nordstrom Ten 4U scholarship. Serena was presented a check for $10,000 and a new Apple MacBook Air.
The Nordstrom Ten 4U $10,000 scholarship recognizes students across the country for their exceptional scholastic achievement and community involvement. Nearly 900 students in northern California and Hawaii applied for the scholarship and Serena Lau was one of only nine recipients.
Serena's impressive academic achievements and outstanding service to Fremont High School and the community were paramount in her selection for this prestigious scholarship. Beginning in her freshman year, Serena began to see the difference that one person can make and has ever since sought out ways to serve others.
She is the President of the FHS Key Club and instrumental in overseeing and participating in service projects. Serena also is a vital member of the FHS Peer Counselors, National Honor Society, California Scholarship Federation, and a section leader in the FHS Orchestra, as well as a member of the FHS badminton and tennis teams.
Serena volunteers at Good Samaritan Hospital and participated in the Stanford Institute of Medical Research internship as well as the California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science.
