Whooping Cough Immunization

Immunizations Available at Local Pharmacies

The newly required Whooping Cough/Pertussis Immunization (Tdap) is now available at most local pharmacies and drug stores.  This includes Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS,Target, and Safeway.

Please note, that Kaiser does not provide free/reduced vaccines to NON MEMBERS unless they have a newborn living at home. Please see attached flyer for a list of local drugstores and reduced cost/free clinics. Click for Flyer

NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENT FOR 2011-2012

California Law requires all students in Grades 7–12 to be immunized against Pertussis (Whooping Cough) by the first day of school next year (August of 2011).

This immunization/booster shot is often referred to as ‘Tdap.’

Students without proof of this immunization will not be allowed to attend school until proper documentation is provided. 

Exemptions are permitted for verified medical conditions or personal beliefs, but official documentation must be completed.

WHAT ALL PARENTS/GUARDIANS MUST DO BEFORE THE 2011-12 SCHOOL YEAR

If your child has received a Tdap booster shot on or after their 7th birthday:

  1. Locate the proper documentation to provide the school (see section below)
  2. If you cannot locate the proper proof/documentation that your child received a Tdap booster, please contact your health care provider and request it as soon as possible
  3. Turn in your proof/documentation to the Main Office of your school


If your child has NOT received a Tdap booster shot on or after their 7th birthday:

  1. Contact your health care provider for information on receiving a Tdap booster
  2. Be sure to save proof/documentation to provide the school (see section below)
  3. Turn in your proof/documentation to the Main Office of your school


PROOF/DOCUMENTATION OF IMMUNIZATION

Any immunization record (often these are a ‘yellow card’, computer printout, immigration record, etc.) which includes all of the following information is acceptable:

  1. Student’s name,
  2. Student’s date of birth,
  3. Tdap Vaccine name or abbreviation,
  4. Date vaccine administered and
  5. Name (written or stamped) of the clinic, office, or doctor administering the vaccine.


TURNING IN THE PERTUSSIS/WHOOPING COUGH IMMUNIZATION RECORD

Beginning on May 2, 2011 and continuing until the first day of school, all 5 high schools will be prepared to accept Pertussis/Whooping Cough immunization records in the Main Office during regular business hours.  Please look for the DROP BOX/BASKET labeled TDAP/IMMUNIZATIONS.

CHILDREN WITHOUT ACCESS TO A DOCTOR OR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER

LOW COST TDAP CLINIC FOR 7TH – 12TH GRADE STUDENTS

Every Thursday afternoon until further notice, the Public Health Department will offer low-cost Tdap shots for children entering 7th through 12th grades that do not have a medical provider or health insurance. Tdap shots will be offered at the Public Health Adult Immunization Clinic located at 976 Lenzen Ave. Suite 1500 San Jose, CA 95126. The cost is $15.00 per shot and parents must bring their child’s yellow immunization card in order to receive a shot. Please bring your child’s yellow immunization card in order to receive a shot and/or this letter requesting the whooping cough booster.

Public Health Department Declares Epidemic of Whooping Cough

The California Department of Public Health has declared an epidemic of Whooping Cough (Pertussis) in California. Whooping cough is a bacterial infection that can cause serious coughing fits that make it hard to breathe.

 Be assured that we will notify families and staff of any additional outbreaks. In addition:

        •  Site and District staff are working closely with County Public Health Department to monitor and
           track suspected or confirmed cases.

        •  We are following the recommended protocols to limit exposure and spread of the infection.

        •  If you have any questions or concerns, or if a member of your family is confirmed to have
           whooping cough, please contact your school's administrative staff.
