College Planning and Essay Workshops

Overview of College Enrichment Offerings

The Fremont Union High School District, in partnership with the City of Cupertino Recreation & Community Services, is pleased to offer a  college preparation course for High School Juniors (class of 2019), taught by experienced FUHSD Guidance Counselors and College/Career Advisors.

College Planning Workshop (CPW)

Offered in Spring to Juniors

and Summer to rising Seniors only

This overview class guides students in reflecting on themselves as students and identifying goals and plans for college. Emphasis is placed on organizing the college search and application process.

  • Topics include: individual academic profile, finding a college match, choosing a major, understanding college systems, application tips and tricks, managing deadlines, applying for financial aid, and letters of recommendation.
  • Students will develop and receive personalized feedback on a list of prospective colleges to which they will apply in the fall.

College Essay Workshop (CEW)

Offered in Fall to Seniors only

and Summer to rising Seniors

This workshop allows students to brainstorm, write, and refine a personal statement essay required for UC or private college applications. Students will have several opportunities to work one-on-one with instructors and revise their drafts:

  • Review essay prompts; read sample essays; review essay tips and tricks; and write and revise a college application essay.
  • Students will draft a college application essay, receive personalized feedback, and use the feedback to revise and improve the essay.

We are currently accepting registrations for the Spring College Essay Workshop:

  • Submit the attached registration form(s) before the end of business Wednesday, February 14 to be entered in a random lottery for placement in your choice of class dates, times and locations. Many classes will fill up; registrations received after the deadline will be enrolled in classes on a space-available basis.
  • Cost for each course is $150. Scholarships are available to those who qualify; see Financial Aid Application form for more information.
  • Please allow a week from the deadline to receive a course confirmation (with dates, instructor and classroom) and scholarship status from FUHSD.

Please contact your student’s Guidance Counselor for more information about the courses. For questions about the registration process, please contact Cupertino Recreation & Community Services at (408) 777-3120.

2018 Summer College Planning and Essay Workshops

Registration for summer workshops is March 19 to April 3 for rising Juniors (Class of 2019).  Workshops are 2 hours a day, 5 days in a row, for 1 week, during the weeks of June 11, June 18, and June 25, at various campuses depending on teacher availability. Courses are scheduled at 8am-10am, 10:30 to 12:30, and a few from 1pm to 3pm.

Students registering for both workshops must take the Planning Workshop the first week and Essay Workshop the second week. Each class moves quickly and requires significant work outside of class.  In reviewing feedback from previous years, we’ve determined we will better serve our students by limiting them to one class at a time.
