Dear Parents and Community Members,
We could not be more proud of our high schools – Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook and Monta Vista – as our students continue to excel! Our academic performance scores are among the very highest in the state for high schools. Furthermore, we are one of the very few high school districts statewide that offers a seven-period academic day making it even more possible for students to participate in our nationally recognized visual and performing arts programs and on athletic teams.

We are proud of the rich and robust curricular program that our District offers our students. However, continuing this level of education has its challenges. You have no doubt heard that the Governor declared a fiscal emergency which threatens public school funding. Many districts throughout the state are resorting to program cuts and layoffs. Working collaboratively with our staff and school board, we are doing everything possible to ensure that cuts do not affect our students. Strong support from our community, in the form of our 2004 Measure L Parcel Tax dollars, has helped our district stave off decreases in salaries and programs. Additionally, because local business and property taxes remain high, we are not yet hit by the effect of the nationwide housing crisis. So for the short term, I am optimistic that our high-quality educational program will remain largely intact.
But with our student population having risen by over 25% in the last 12 years, our resources are strained to the limit. Given scarce resources, our district continues to be committed to the highest level of accountability to ensure that community tax dollars are spent wisely. To this end, we
• instituted a residency verification program to ensure that community dollars are
spent on students residing within our district’s boundaries,
• spent over 81% of our operating budget directly on classroom instruction and student
services — among the highest percentages in all of California,
• cultivated strong relationships with all employee groups that allow collaborative
negotiations and shared fiscal planning, and
• developed environmentally conscientious energy saving measures.
Through the combined efforts of all of our stakeholders in our educational community, I am confident that we will continue to provide the very best educational experience to all of our students. Thank you for your ongoing support of our high schools – together we can make a profound difference in the lives of our students.
Sincerely,
Polly M. Bove
