3/18/08 Student Board Report by JingJing Xia, Cupertino High School Senior
CUPERTINO HIGH SCHOOL
Last Friday, Cupertino had their Spring Sports Rally and the theme was Food Groups. That night, Cupertino also hosted the IDC dance and over 500 students attended. This week is Cupertino’s Powderpuff Tournament and it’s the school’s first year in doing so. The spring musical Seussical will begin this Thursday night at 7:30PM. Seussical is a Broadway musical based on the collection of Dr. Seuss books, hence – it’s name. The overall plotline follows one of Dr. Seuss’s most famous characters, Horton, which is just in the time for the new Blockbuster movie that came out last weekend. So if your children enjoyed the Jim Carrey film then they’ll probably enjoy this too! Last week, a guest speaker from the Lost Boys of Sudan came to Cupertino and gave several presentations throughout the day (See first slideshow photo). Student packed the auditorium each period to listen to his story of struggles during the Second Sudanese Civil War. He talked about starting out when he was five years old and walking with thousands of other children in Africa to escape the war. They walked, literally just walked and looked for shelter, for several years until finding a refugee camp. There, the lucky ones were sent to an American foster family for one month before having to depend on themselves in America. The guest speaker was one of those boys and his presentation was a way to bring awareness on the current Darfur situation as well as teach students that in the end they must depend on themselves and their education. It was a superb presentation that moved many students. Finally, Cupertino would like to congratulate their Robotics team for coming in 4th place out of 48 in the Silicon Valley Regional.
LYNBROOK HIGH SCHOOL
Last month, over 60 student volunteers planted 14 new trees on Campus that were donated by “Our City Forest.” Lynbrook also recently received a $3600 grant to “Go Green” from the City of San Jose. A Campus Beautification Project is planned for this month and the school is hoping to expand their recycling to help their campus and neighborhood. The Pennies for Patients coin drive is also taking place this month. All funds go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL
