10/16/07 Student Board Report by JingJing Xia, Cupertino High School Senior
ALL five schools:
Homecoming will take place this month at all five high schools — Cupertino celebrated Spirit Week and Homecoming last week. Homestead and Monta Vista High Schools kicked off their Spirit Weeks today and Fremont and Lynbrook High Schools will celebrate the next two weeks. Students are scrambling to finish their floats and skits. Meanwhile, ASB’s are finalizing Homecoming courts that will be presented during each school’s halftime show. On top of that, some schools that traditionally do a semi-formal Homecoming, such as Monta Vista, have girls frantically searching the mall to find that perfect dress. Not to mention a perfect date.
Monta Vista and Homestead kicked off their Spirit Weeks today with dress-up days to build school and class spirit. Both schools have traditionally built floats to be presented at halftime of the football game on Friday night. The week leading up to the game is spent dressing up to themes and having class competitions. At Monta Vista, students will be dressing up to themes such as Blast from the Past (50s, 60s, 80s), Careers and Occupations, and Through the Ages (Greece, Roman). Homestead is likely to be similar and both schools will host class competitions during lunch, which will be factored into the total class points to determine the winner of Homecoming Week.
Cupertino High School:
Cupertino's homecoming theme this year was 'Cupertino Caught on Genre.' The freshmen were Romance, sophomores were Mystery, juniors were musical, and seniors were horror. Since picking their themes at the beginning of September, each class has spent countless hours painting posters, practicing dances, rehearsing skits, and preparing for Spirit Week. Usually there are about 25 posters per class, which can take up to one and a half hours each. The skit is 15 minutes long and traditionally there are three dances involved that the students choreographed themselves. For the amount of time and energy spent on preparing, efforts were paid off when each class finally performed in front of the school and demonstrated their class pride. In the end, the Class of 2008 won for the second year in a row. After spirit week, Friday night was spent celebrating at the homecoming game and later the homecoming dance.
