11/27/07 Student Board Report by JingJing Xia, Cupertino High School Senior
FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL holds a blood drive twice a year, hosted by the Stanford Blood Center. ASB organized one of those blood drives last Monday and more than 150 students donated. Fremont has around 800 students who are eligible to donate (16 years and older plus other health requirements) — 150 is roughly 19% of those eligible, which is a large number compared to the national average of 5% and local average of 3%. Good job Fremont • On November 16th, the Urban High School Leadership Team, which consists of staff members working towards their Masters, put on a College Fair for students. The fair took place in the gym during a rally schedule, making it easily accessible to everyone on campus, and over 30 colleges were represented. Students would like to take this chance to thank those dedicated staff members. • Some future events for Fremont include the Book Drive for children who can’t afford books and the Can Food Drive, which is run by the Latinas Club.
MONTA VISTA HIGH SCHOOL
Monta Vista is also involved in a Blood Drive and received over 120 participants. • The Spanish Honor Society recently hired a salsa teacher to help them choreograph and prepare for a salsa performance. • Girls Tennis made CCS.
HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL
The annual Senior Class Talent Show was on November 16th. • Homestead is also involved in the Can Food Drive and hopes to get donations of canned and package goods from the community. • Recognition: Volleyball and Football teams made CCS. Congrats!
CUPERTINO HIGH SCHOOL
The annual Harvest Food Drive is coming up in December. Local community members are asked to donate canned or packaged goods and leave them in a paper bag, which ASB helps pick up. This year’s goal is 500 pounds. • The new CHS Robotics club, established in September, had struggled to come up with enough money to go to a National Robotics competition. Fortunately, Google and NASA recently solved these financial setbacks. Google agreed to donate $4000 dollars while NASA is donating $6000. Cupertino wishes the club the best of luck. • Girl’s Volleyball and Cross Country made CCS. Congratulations to Cross Country runners Sumika Shiokawa and Abiy Gebrekristos who both went to State Championships this past weekend.
LYNBROOK HIGH SCHOOL
Two Fridays ago, Lynbrook held a Walkathon named “Dollars for Darfur.” It was the closing event for their Global Awareness Week and ASB reported that it was very successful. Live jazz and rock bands were invited to play during the Walkathon, which was organized by clubs and ASB. Stations around the track featured pamphlets with information about Darfur and free food. Participants were sponsored, getting a certain amount of money for each lap walked, and all money will be sent to help the situation in Darfur. • Lynbrook’s Field Hockey and Volleyball teams made CCS. Lynbrook would also like to recognize Coach Raffo (Varsity Field Hockey) who was recognized as Coach of the Year in the league.
