BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting January 9, 2007
*******************************************************************
COMMUNICATIONS
CSEA President Pam Coppel stated she is looking forward to attending and helping at the Community Reception for Superintendent Polly Bove on January 11th. She also invited Board members to CSEA’s recognition dinner on May 21st. FEA President Tom Avvakumovits commented that the teachers’ association is also looking forward to the reception for Polly. He then invited Board members to FEA’s annual teacher celebration dinner on Friday, May 18th at Mariani’s Restaurant. • Board Member Nancy Newton acknowledged two generous donations accepted by the Board of Trustees tonight — Faustino and Manuela Rodriguez’s donation of $20,000 for funding for scholarships awarded annually to a Fremont High School Senior and former Homestead High School Graduate and Apple Computer founder Steve Wozniak’s $5,000 donation to HHS computer robotics. Donations to the District are made through the Educational Services Center and accepted by the Board under the Consent Calendar of Board Agendas.
STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board Member Peter Lu, Monta Vista High School senior, reported on school activities at all five high schools. He reported that IDC students will present their findings at the District’s Wellness Committee meeting this Thursday. This includes results from the 1,000 students surveyed districtwide on their preferred food choices for school cafeterias. He also announced that IDC will hold Health Week at all schools in February. The Board, Superintendent Polly Bove, and staff congratulated Peter on his early acceptance to Yale University.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Polly Bove invited Board Members to an all day meeting on January 19th to begin to revise the District’s guidance process. She also stated that PTA/PTSA presidents and students will be invited to join staff in these discussions. • Superintendent Bove reported that she was notified this weekend of the sudden death from an infectious disease of a wrestler from Piedmont Hills High School, noting District wrestlers had no contact with wrestlers from that high school.
LEGAL EXPENSES RELATING TO DISMISSAL OF FORMER SUPERINTENDENT
As requested by a community member and a Board member, the District is reporting expenses connected with the dismissal of former superintendent Steve Rowley. Legal expenses billed from law firm of Zampi and Associates for June 24 - December 27, 2006 total $88,513.61; from law firm of Bennett & Sharpe, Inc. — $21,011.10; and from law firm Lozano Smith — $14,519.50.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES...
• Declared NO OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2007-08 SCHOOL YEAR for our five high
schools—Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista. Shelby Spain,
Director of Guidance & Community College Programs, reported that the District will
continue to experience student growth in the 2007-08 school year. School sites have
already either exceeded or are nearing Board-adopted capacities; so at this time, there is
no excess capacity at any of our high schools to house students who live outside each
school’s attendance area.
• Awarded a contract, for hourly services with an estimated total cost of $32,578.00, to
Smith-Emery Company, for Special Testing and Inspection for the Administration
Building and Cafeteria, Project 912, at Monta Vista High School, and authorized staff to
issue change orders, as necessary, pursuant to Public Contract Code 20118.4
• Adopted Resolution #067-08 Supporting “Fix” the No Child Left Behind Act Invited by
United States Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, Board Member Nancy Newton will attend the
National School Boards Association’s 34th Annual Federal Relations Network Conference
the end of this month in Washington, DC. This is an opportunity for school board
members across the country to meet with their congressional representatives to discuss
federal education issues.
• Approved job description and salary range for Purchasing Agent CSEA President Pam
Coppel and Director of Business & Property Services Christine Mallery reported they
worked closely with Vance Jacobson, consultant hired for CSEA job classification study,
to create this new high level classified position. Coppel acknowledged Superintendent
Bove for encouraging and helping expand the job opportunities for classified employees.
• Discussed reviewing current policies regarding the role of the Board and staff concerning
hiring and promotion practices. The Board agreed to bring in a California School Boards
Association facilitator to work with the Board on effective governance training.
